School pickup safety checklist for parents

School pickup is one of the few times every day when a child is handed from one responsible adult to another. Most days it's routine. The goal of this checklist is to keep it that way, especially on the days that aren't.
Your school's own dismissal policy always comes first. Use this list to make sure your family is covered on your side.
Before the school year starts
- Confirm your authorized pickup list with the office. Every adult who might ever collect your child (grandparents, a neighbor, a carpool parent) should be on it. Remove anyone who shouldn't be.
- Tell the school about custody arrangements in writing. If a court order limits who can pick up your child, the office needs a copy. Don't rely on teachers remembering a conversation.
- Learn the dismissal process. Where the car line forms, where walkers exit, where bus riders wait, and what happens to kids who aren't collected on time.
- Keep your contact details current. A wrong phone number is the most common reason a school can't reach a parent when something changes.
What your child should know
- Who is allowed to pick them up, and that they should never leave with anyone else, even someone they know, without hearing it from you or the school first.
- A family code word. If plans change at the last minute and someone unexpected is sent, that person should know the word. Change it if it's ever used or shared.
- What to do if nobody comes. Go back inside to the office or a teacher. Don't wait alone at the curb, and don't start walking home unless that's the plan.
- Your phone number by heart, for younger kids especially.
On the day
- Tell the school about changes as early as possible, through the channel the school asks for. A message to your child alone isn't enough.
- Follow the car-line rules, even when you're in a hurry: stay in your car where required, don't wave kids across traffic, and pull forward to the loading point.
- Put the phone down while moving through the lot. Pickup zones are full of small people who are hard to see from a driver's seat.
- Make sure your child is buckled before you pull away.
When something goes wrong
- Running late? Call the office first, then let your child know if they have a phone.
- Child not where they should be? Check with the office and their teacher straight away. Don't wait to see if they turn up.
- Someone unexpected tried to pick up your child? Report it to the school, even if staff handled it correctly.
How technology can help
Many schools now use a pickup app instead of radios and printed lists. The best ones do three things: confirm the parent is actually at the pickup area before calling a child out, show staff exactly which child is being collected and by whom, and keep a timestamped record of every release.
That's how SafeLoop for Schools works. A parent's “We're here” request only reaches staff once our server confirms they're at the pickup lot during pickup hours. Staff see who's arrived and which child they're collecting, release with a tap, and every pickup is logged. It's free for parents, and children don't need a phone.
If your school doesn't use it yet, you can suggest a free pilot.
